Barcelona Celebrates Botero's Most Ambitious Exhibition in Spain

Starting February 14, 2025, the Palau Martorell in Barcelona will become the epicenter of art with the inauguration of a monumental exhibition dedicated to Fernando Botero, one of the most iconic artists of the 20th century. The exhibition, titled Fernando Botero. A Universal Master, is the most complete ever organized in Spain, bringing together 110 works that reflect the extensive career of the Colombian master.

A Tribute to Botero's Trajectory

Curated by Lina Botero and Cristina Carrillo de Albornoz, the exhibition pays homage to the unmistakable style of generous volumes and vibrant colors that define "Boterism." More than a year after the artist's passing, the exhibition explores his creative evolution over six decades, from his early works to his most recent creations.

Featured Works and Classical Influences

The exhibition also highlights the influence that Spain and Italy had on Botero's work, two countries that profoundly marked his aesthetic. Among the most anticipated pieces are Las Meninas by Velázquez and Homage to Mantegna, two works that will be exhibited for the first time in Spain thanks to the loan from a private American collection, recently discovered by Lina Botero.

These pieces are joined by other iconic series by the artist, focusing on themes such as daily life in Latin America, the circus, religion, still life, and his reinterpretations of great masterpieces of art history.

Technical Diversity in Botero's Work

The exhibition offers an exhaustive tour through the different techniques used by the artist. In addition to the renowned oil paintings on canvas, visitors will be able to admire sculptures, watercolors, sanguine drawings, charcoals, and pencil drawings. This technical diversity highlights Botero's versatility and his ability to master multiple artistic disciplines.

The exhibition has been produced and organized by Palau Martorell and Arthemisia, in collaboration with the Fernando Botero Foundation, and will feature works from private collections that have been exceptionally loaned for this occasion.
